Voices for Casey’s 2024 Community Survey has received over 1000 responses with a resounding message - the two-party system is broken.
Integrity in politics rated highly, summarised by a survey comment repeatedly made, “Mostly, we don't trust politicians." People want greater transparency in politics and funds being allocated based on genuine community needs.
People are stretched due to cost-of-living pressures, life is a struggle with escalating grocery bills, electricity, gas, insurance, and health care prices. The survey results tell us people in Casey are ‘going hard’ with families digging deep to keep all the balls in the air.
People are frustrated with political dishonesty and see Liberal and Labor party agendas prioritised over the needs of local people, with the two major parties not working to support the people of Casey on the issues important to us. An example of the disconnect is the 1,000 people surveyed rated immigration second last (10th out of 11), and yet question time in Canberra is absorbed with immigration point scoring by both parties.
One resident said, "I want a person to stand up to the parties and tell them this is bullshit."
There is a widespread belief in Casey that the party system is undermining democracy at the local level, leaving people feeling abandoned by their representatives. Many respondents expressed a desire for elected officials to genuinely represent the interests of the community rather than adhere to party lines.
Voices for Casey launched the 2024 Listening Report in September, and will use this input as a basis to assess how local elected representatives are doing, in terms of representing local priorities.
