Change the Name Petition
NOW is the time to actively engage in improving our democracy.
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is currently reviewing the names of federal electoral divisions in Victoria.
Why CHANGE THE NAME?
The federal electorate of Casey has the SAME name as the City of Casey, a Victorian Local Government Council, causing voter confusion and negatively impacting participation in our democracy.
SIGN THE PETITION TO HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD
The federal electorate of Casey has no overlap with the geographic area of the City of Casey. The Casey electorate is geographically similar to the Shire of Yarra Ranges Local Government area.
The federal electorate of Casey is named in honour of Lord Richard Gavin Gardiner Casey. Lord Casey has no direct connection to the Casey electorate and its' residents. He was a Member of the House of Representatives for the seat of Corio (1931-40) and then the seat of La Trobe (1949-60).
Voices for Casey will lodge this petition with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) THIS Friday 28 June, the date submissions close.
PLEASE SHARE & FORWARD THE PETITION to others who may want to sign. We have a goal of 500 signatures.
During the 2023 Referendum a local community group called Casey for YES was formed with 293 Members and 138 Active Volunteers. This group suggested the Australian Electoral Commission should undertake community engagement to listen and survey the electors to change the name of the Casey electorate to a First Nations name that is meaningful to our community.
Sixty-three (63) suggestions were received as part of the AEC Electoral Review Process with eight submissions (12.7% of all submissions) suggesting the name of the federal electorate of Casey should be changed to Barak. See Voices for Casey's submission here. In response, the AEC's draft response released in early June is to retain the current name.
In addition to the petition, submissions are now open for you to submit your own objection direct to the Australian Electoral Commission asking again for the name to be changed - objections close Friday 28 June. Click here to upload your objection.
