Voices for Casey supports changing the name of the electorate from Casey to Barak to avoid the confusion between the electorate and the geographically distinct City of Casey and to honour an Indigenous person connected to the electorate whose leadership made a significant contribution to both the electorate and to Australia. Voices for Casey believes a well-run community consultation process will strengthen community support for the proposed name change and offers to support the AEC consultation process. Background
On 9 August 2023 the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) commenced Step 1 of a 7-Step process to review the redistribution of federal electoral divisions in Victoria, including names.
The public were invited to submit their suggestions related to naming and redistribution of Victorian federal electorates (Step 2) which closed 24 November 2023. Sixty-three (63) suggestions were received with 8 people suggesting the name of the federal electorate of Casey should be changed, with 6 people suggesting a new name of Barak.
Step 3 invited the public to make a comment on the Step 2 suggestions, with submissions closing on Friday 8 December 2023. All Step 3 comments received will be published on the AEC page in December 2023 - click here to see Step 3 comments lodged.
